Headache is one of the most common disorders seen in clinical practice. It has many possible causes which vary from external factors such as trauma to the head or an invasion of pathogens like wind, cold, heat or dampness or it can be a symptom of an internal disorder. Headaches arising from internal conditions can be the result of a deficiency or a blockage of Qi (energy) or blood in a specific organ or channel.

This article aims to outline the causes of pain and compression in the chest area from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) point of view. Chest pain can result from the invasion of external pathogenic factors, the internal condition of the client or the two combined. These factors can cause obstruction in the channels and/or the corresponding organs in the chest and therefore pain. The main organs located in the chest are the Heart and Lungs and are often the main causes of chest pain. Although not located in the chest area, the Liver can also be a causal factor in chest pain.
