Posted in Acupuncture, Food & Diet, General Health on April 30th, 2010 by Ping Ming Health – Be the first to comment

When I began writing this article, I wanted to address the upcoming season and its abundance of bringing disease along with it. I am living in Perth, Australia in which the  season is in autumn but heading into winter it is between April and May. The characteristics of the season now still has some summer heat whilst the autumn has also brought the cold. This is why the temperature in Perth varies quite often. When the winter comes in Perth, it is usually cold, windy and is abundant in rain. Going into winter, yang energy is getting weaker whilst the ying energy is getting stronger- it is during this time that Yang transforms to ying. It is because of this that during this season many people catch the flu, colds and viruses.

Many people in winter can catch the flu many times, as they have not completely recovered which may affect their health and job. Because having a flu, cold or virus can be spread very easily, it may effect a whole family or office. Having a cold for a very long time can cause many problems such as; pneumonia, asthma, kidney infection, urinary bladder infection and glandular fever. Catching either the flu, cold or virus can cause other illnesses to get worse for example having sinus infection, asthma, bronchitis and arthritis. This is why it is very necessary why I want to share my knowledge of how Chinese medicine and acupuncture greatly improve the immune system and how it can prevent illness.

In this article I want to teach you how important food can be for nourishing and supporting your body in winter.

What is tonifying food?

Chinese medicine considers food which we eat as being highly nutritious which has certain effects on the body such as tonifying ying and yang, qi and blood. When you eat these certain food, it can help to balance your body. For example, if you have blood deficiency eat more goji berries, chinese red dates (you can buy this in your local chinese deli) and carrots will help improve your blood. When you have poor circulation such as cold hand and cold feet you can eat chives, prawns and lamb more often to warm the circulation. When you have constipation, it is because you have too much heat and toxins in the intestines; eating more cucumber, tomatoes, eggplant, plums and spinach to help clear the intestines.

It is important to eat more natural foods and use less chemical medication to balance your body. Diet therapy can help the body at any stage of disease, such as the beginning, during treatment and during recovery. read more »

Odema (fluid retention, also spelt oedema) is a very popular case in our clinic, the odema can be stuck in different parts of the body such as the ankle, legs, knees, wrist and hand, eyelid and face. It can also be throughout the entire body. Odema can stay all the time, and others can come and go. In early stage of odema, many people do not pay much attention to it, and often do not treat it. However, it is the internal organs telling the body that something is not right, thus it is important for it to be checked. Long term or serious odema can lead to kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other disorders in associated organs. read more »
