The Liver has many important functions in the body. One of the main functions of the Liver is to ensure the smooth flow of Qi or energy throughout the body. This smooth flow of Qi assists the Spleen and Stomach to regulate digestion and allows emotions to flow freely. The Liver is also responsible for storing Blood in the body and regulating menstruation. It influences the tendons in the body, ensuring the smooth movement of joints and good muscle action.

The Liver has different aspects to its functioning, including Liver Qi, Liver Blood and Liver Yin. Over-consumption of greasy and “hot” foods such as lamb, beef, curries, spices and fried foods can lead to Liver Qi stagnation and Heat. Different foods assist the different aspects of the Liver. Foods that benefit the Liver include: celery, carrots, tomato, spinach, silverbeet, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, lemons, liver meat and black sesame seeds.

Peppermint and green tea are good for the Liver, while a lemon and honey drink can clear Liver Heat.
