Celery has a sweet and bitter flavour, flavoursome juice and is cool and crispy in nature. It can be eaten raw or cooked. In traditional Chinese Medicine celery also has many other health benefits.
1. Health Benefits of Celery
Ancient Chinese medicine books recorded that celery is sweet and cool in nature, and able to clear the mind and rid frustration “heat”, tranquilise the mind, cool and clear the Blood, Intestine, Stomach, and calm the Liver. We often recommend it to patients in the clinic and it is used as an assisted treatment option.
2. Who is celery suitable for?
Chinese Medicine is always concerned about food diet therapy during your treatment or in recovery from sickness and in general health.
i) High Blood Pressure & High Cholesterol: People with high blood pressure may experience the following symptoms – red face, red eyes, headache, dizziness, constipation, emotional, easy to anger, insomnia. You can drink celery & carrot juice or eat a salad with celery.
ii) Those who suffer stress, tension and depression from a disorder of the Liver channel and may also suffer the following symptoms – insomnia, copious dreams, pain or discomfort around the lower border of each side of the rib area, migraine headache or PMS, should eat more celery or during the evening time, drink a glass of celery juice mixed with milk (half a portion each). It serves to calm the nervous system and increase quality of sleep.
iii) Those who suffer from excessive warmth in the body and have a flushed face, dry mouth, yellowish urine and constipation due to a build up of excess internal heat in the Lung and Large Intestine should eat more celery, as celery can clear the Intestines and remove pathogenic heat. I recommend having a stir fry celery with egg.

i) Celery Carrot Juice
Combine 1-2 celery sticks & 1 carrot in the juicer.
Effects of the juice: Clear summer heat and body heat; help reduce blood pressure
ii) Celery Milk Juice
Combine half cup of milk and half cup of celery juice and drink at room temperature.
Effects of the juice: Tranquilise the mind and clear the Liver heat to help sleep
iii) Stir Fry Celery with Egg
Fry 1 egg with 1 tblsp of olive oil then add 2 sticks of chopped celery & fry together for 3 minutes. When finished frying, add a small amount of salt or soy sauce to taste.
This dish is very easy to cook and very tasty and colourful with the green and yellow.
Effects of the dish: Cool the body & help reduce cholesterol.
i) If you have diarrhoea eat less celery or avoid eating celery altogether.
