What to do during a cold?

Having a cold (influenza) is a frequently encountered disease. Almost everyone in their lives will experience some form of a cold, whether it occurs a few times or hundreds of times. Having a cold can occur in all four seasons, especially during seasonal changes.

The following are common symptoms of a cold: sneezing, headaches, dry and painful throat, coughing, whole body aches, even feeling hot and cold. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that most common cold arises during windy cold/windy hot conditions which penetrate the lungs through the muscles and skin.

During a cold, one should observe the following points:

One should have plenty of rest. The Lungs have the ability to counter external pathogenic influences, in the case of a common light cold, if one has plenty of proper rest and high immunity, it will take 2-5 days to recuperate.

One should drink more water or green tea which can help “flush” the body. One should eat easily digestible food, try to avoid oily, fried or hot and spicy food, otherwise these foods can cause indigestion, causing the cold disease to spread from the Lungs into the gastrointestinal tract. Coupled with the above mentioned cold symptoms, it will present symptoms of vomiting, high fever, diarrhea or constipation, which indicate a more severe form of cold.

The common cold can at first appear to be a harmless disease, but if one is not careful, it can develop into more severe types of diseases such as pneumonia, Kidney and gastrointestinal infections. Those who have contracted a cold should be careful. If the cold remains unresolved one should seek medical attention.
